The establishment of an even stand of grass and clover is essential for the production of milk or meat from a ruminant animal. Grass provides a huge abundance of potentially high quality roughage. Grasses and legumes are the cow's natural feed, and by using today's modern and highly trialled cultivars, it is possible to establish, maintain and utilise these natural foods to produce high production levels of milk and meat.
It has now become very much more important to make use of the naturally produced foods available from well maintained pastures. The pressure for extra cereal production for bio fuels and the increased demand for human food grains has led to very high prices for animal feeding products based on these arable products.
Grass intake depends on quality and this starts with the grass mixture you sow. When forage quality is improved, the daily production increases because the fermentation of carbohydrates in the animal speeds up and the flow of forage through the rumen accelerates. As a consequence forage intake improves. Clover, in combination with grass, increases feed intake because it has a lower fibre content than grass. Inclusion of up to 50% White Clover in the diet increases forage intake by 10 - 20%, with the associated benefit to the health of the cow.
The first step to achieving the desired result is to select a blend of grass and clover from the following mixtures, which will provide grazing, conservation or a blend of both. The mixture selector is provided to help your decision and will guide you through short term cutting to long term grazing mixtures and many options in between.
