2008 has proved to be one of the most difficult years for farming and country pursuits in living memory, due to causes both environmental and political. Adverse weather conditions resulted in the dullest August and wettest September on record, making the cereal harvest all but impossible across much of the UK, and many crops intended for game cover and forage suffered from lack of sunshine and waterlogged soil. Livestock farmers were forced to break into their winter forage supplies to feed stock brought inside before time. In addition, massive increases in the price of fuel, fertiliser and other agricultural commodities plus the inexorable spread of TB and Blue Tongue, have all played their part.
However, we must be optimistic and hope that 2009 will bring us all a change of fortune...
