BTME 2006 -
Something to sing about for Johnsons

New formulations launched at BTME 2006 for Johnsons include Rye Green and J5, the latter which provides excellent year round colour and is very hardwearing under close mown conditions, ideal for golf tees, fairways and driving ranges.  Rye Green is a great choice for the renovation of extremely worn greens, incorporating a top rated turf type Perennial Ryegrass which provides excellent recovery and hardwearing qualities.

Also available from the impressive Johnsons portfolio, is Villa, a new Velvet Bent, promising to set new standards in green’s quality.  With double the shoot density of a traditional Agrostis and improved colour and fineness of leaf, the new cultivar is worth finding out more about.

Finally, if you really want something to sing about, Carioke, the new Chewings Fescue, is available in our Fescue mix which includes the unique Sheeps Fescue, Quatro alongside other top rated cultivars.

BTME 2006 - Camera Friendly Mixtures from Johnsons appear on the Cat Walk

New formulations for Johnsons launched at BTME 2006, include Wembley Shade and Wembley Way.  The latter is the number one Sports Turf Renovation Mixture available and therefore ideal for high profile pitches that need to be “camera friendly”.  After many years of research, new cultivars have been carefully blended to produce a turf with excellent colour, disease resistance and cleanness of cut, giving the visual merit necessary for today’s multi media world.

Wembley Shade includes True Putt,
Poa Reptans, proven under technical and field trials, to be the only suitable species to compete with Perennial Ryegrass under heavy shade and football type wear.  Combined with top rated cultivars including Bizet and Verdi, it produces a sward of exceptional wear tolerance and density, ideal for today’s stadiums.

Another exciting development available is unique primed  Limousine Smooth Stalked Meadow Grass, ensuring rapid establishment and persistence even in Ryegrass swards.  The use of primed  Limousine also extends the sowing season at both ends of the temperature scale.  Improvements in turf quality are quite spectacular.

Drought concerns dampened by DLF – J3/J4

New mixtures from Johnsons Sport and Amenity at DLF Trifolium have been designed with the current drought issue and subsequent threat of extensive hose pipe bans in mind.

J3 and J4 include top rated cultivars such as the unique Sheeps Fescue, Quatro which is very drought tolerant.  Other species which offer a similar advantage are Tall Fescue and Red Fescue, which offers the additional benefit of being visually attractive.

One of the most successful ways of coping with dry summers, while maintaining a high quality sward is regular overseeding with Fescue based mixtures. This will reduce and control high levels of Poa Annua.

J3 and J4 are available from Johnsons Sport and Amenity and include top Chewings Fescue such as Carioke, Musica and Darwin, as well as Leonora and Cezanne Creeping Red Fescue.

Drought concerns dampened by DLF – Pro 29

Following on from extensive concerns in the trade about drought and the forthcoming hose pipe bans, a new mixture called Pro 29 (ProRange) DroughtMaster has been formulated by DLF Trifolium Ltd.  The mixture includes Tall Fescue and Slender Creeping Red Fescue, both known to be extremely drought tolerant species.

Also included in the Pro Range mixture, are microclovers, tiny fine leaved clovers which, due to their deep roots, are extremely drought tolerant.  There are other environmental benefits as the microclover provides the grass with a natural source of fertiliser thus helping it to stay healthy and vigorous.

“Generally turf stays greener in dry periods during the summertime, therefore the need for irrigation may be reduced,” quotes Soren Ugilt Larsen, Agronomist at The Danish Forest & Landscape Research Institute.  (Please visit www.microclover.com for more information).

It is very hard to think of a more environmentally friendly product with such benefits!  Because there is less need for fertiliser and irrigation and no spraying of fungicides, this is a low maintenance, low cost solution.  And one to consider if the hose pipe ban affects you.

Has to be seen to be believed!

After many years of breeding investment, you can now witness an exciting breakthrough with your own eyes. Tiny fine leaved clovers, known as microclovers, are available in mixtures for many different applications.  Microclover “spoon feeds” the grass with Nitrogen making the turf healthy and vigorous.  The healthy and dense growth of clover and grass together crowds out weeds and prevents new ones establishing.

It is very hard to think of a more environmentally friendly product with such benefits!  Because there is less need for fertiliser and irrigation and no spraying of fungicide, this is a low maintenance, low cost solution.

What’s more, microclover has been bred to stay green all year round.  The healthy growth of the accompanying grasses contributes to the overall attractive green colour which remains throughout the year, even during the winter.

No other white clover types tolerate mowing like microclover does.  This is linked to the unique dense structure of microclover stolons, therefore even the cutting height can be “micro”.

Microclover mixtures are suitable for fairways and roughs, where an excellent green colour has been achieved with minimum input.  Even on the tees, gaps close up quicker by the dense spread of stolons,” quotes Per Knudsen, Greenkeeper,
at Viborg Golf Klub

Dramatic results from research at STRI - commissioned by DLF Trifolium Ltd

The final report of trials carried out at The Sports Turf Research Institute, Bingley shows that increasing overseeding rates has a dramatic effect on the speed of establishment and quality of the new sward. The research funded by DLF Trifolium Ltd, examined the effects of different overseeding rates on the speed of recovery of a heavily worn perennial ryegrass sward, (simulating an end of season winter sports pitch). Overseeding is an important part of the renovation programme for intensively used winter games pitches.

Following establishment in May 2004, the initial effects of overseeding at five different rates on live ground cover and turf quality, were assessed weekly for the first nine weeks of the trial.  The longer term effects of the different overseeding rates, under simulated football wear conditions, were then assessed for a further nine months until the end of the trial in May 2005.

During the renovation of worn perennial ryegrass turf increasing seed rates to between 50 and 75 grams/square metre dramatically increased the speed of establishment and turf quality of the sward.  There was a direct relationship between seed rate and turf quality during the establishment phase.  The higher seed rates markedly reduced the time required to achieve a surface that would be deemed fit for use.  The density and uniformity of sward produced at the end of the establishment phase was also improved by increasing the normal seed rates.

New colour Guide to Amenity Grasses

Do you need reminding if there are rhizomes present in a particular grass or not?  Well, here in a pocket size, full colour book is all the information you need to identify grasses and their related diseases and pests.

Combining useful technical information with outstanding photography is an extremely difficult task to accomplish but DLF Trifolium have responded superbly to the challenge with their new “Guide to Amenity Grasses”.

The Guide includes sections on grasses with useful information covering shoot density, germination period and cutting heights as well as distinguishing features and special properties of the particular specie.  This section is followed by “Fungal Diseases”, their symptoms, hosts and when they occur and finally a section on “Pests”, superbly illustrated in keeping with the rest of the guide.

“Grass identification and grass structure contributes to the overall usefulness of this Guide,” explains Miranda Harris, Marketing Manager for DLF Trifolium Ltd.  “We hope it will be referred to as the ‘Grass Bible’ by landscape architects, contractors, groundsmen, technical advisors and students alike.”
Every detail has been carefully considered from the contents, to the size and practical finish of each page, designed to be robust and withstand an outdoor existence.  Many of the photographs are courtesy of the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) who have contributed with their expertise to the technical contents of the Guide.

The Guide to Amenity Grasses costs £5.99 plus postage and packaging and is available from DLF Trifolium. If you would like a copy, please email amenity@dlf.co.uk or call 01386 791102.
