As market pressures force land usage in various directions, it is encouraging to note that even with the demand to grow ever more cereals, wide grass margins and field corners are still being established as havens for wildlife. We shall reap a rich reward
for this care and attention for years to come
Environmental Stewardship has evolved as an established part of farming practice for the future of the countryside. Farmers, as custodians of our land, influence by their actions how we view the picture of the landscape as it unfolds before us.
We must remember that however much the authorities encourage farmers to subscribe to environmental stewardship schemes, profitable farming will achieve many of these ends far more quickly and with less disruption.
Doubts about future financial support for the higher echelons within the scheme seem now to have been dispelled and we can look forward to future developments in this area of Environmental Stewardship.
