Browntop Bents
Agrostis capillaris
Ideal for golf greens in mixture with Festuca rubra commutata and Festuca rubra litoralis. Does best under relatively poor growth conditions. Over-fertilising, over-watering and compact or waterlogged soil will result in displacement of the species by annual meadow grass.
Establishing Browntop Bentgrass
Best practice guidance for golf and bowling greens
Creating the conditions
Best Practice:
- Free-draining, well-aerated rootzone.
- Organic matter managed progressively through aeration and light topdressing.
- Soil moisture monitored and maintained around 15–20% VMC during establishment.
- Appropriate wetting agent programme to improve moisture distribution and reduce localised dry patch.
- Improve sunlight and airflow where possible, particularly from eastern and southern aspects.
- Target late August to early October while soil temperatures remain above 8°C.
Technical note: Bentgrass overseeding strengthens an environment already favouring bentgrass. It should form part of a long-term species management programme rather than be expected to overcome poor drainage, heavy shade or persistent surface wetness.
Successful overseeding
Best Practice:
- Good seed-to-soil contact.
- Seed depth approximately 2–3mm.
- Oversow existing greens at 5–8g/m².
- Two passes at half-rate where practical.
- Irrigate only as required to maintain moisture around the seed.
- Take advantage of natural autumn dew where conditions allow.
At a glance:
Oversowing rate: 5g/m²
One hectare: 50kg
Approximately 10,000 seeds per gram
Approximately 500 million seeds introduced per hectare
Supporting establishment
Best Practice:
- Raise mowing height slightly during establishment where possible.
- Reduce brushing and grooming intensity through autumn.
- Delay aggressive verticutting until seedlings reach the second leaf stage (typically 6–8 weeks).
- Maintain balanced nutrition.
- Biostimulants and seaweed programmes can support establishment.
- Plant Growth Regulators may help reduce competition from the existing sward.
- Monitor soil moisture throughout establishment.
Technical note: Many overseeding programmes achieve excellent germination but reduced establishment because normal maintenance resumes too quickly. Protecting young plants during their first few weeks often has the greatest influence on long-term success.
Building bentgrass populations
Successful long-term programmes combine:
- Firm surfaces
- Good drainage
- Organic matter management
- Appropriate mowing heights
- Balanced nutrition
- Consistent moisture
- Light and airflow
- Reduced disturbance
- Regular overseeding
Independent BSPB performance testing
Modern browntop bent cultivars are independently assessed through the BSPB Turfgrass Seed trials, where all cultivars are routinely evaluated under 4mm mowing. Performance is assessed for characteristics including shoot density, visual merit, fineness of leaf texture and overall close-mown performance, providing independent data to support cultivar selection for fine turf.
